OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the course delegates will :-
· Have learnt the skills of face-to-face communication, i.e. listening, questioning, interpreting and feedback
· Be able to structure and control interviews
· Be better prepared for selection interviews and more able to assess candidates
· Know how to deal with disciplinary issues constructively
· Understand the value of regular performance review meetings in meeting the needs of their staff
METHOD:
The programme is highly participative with syndicate work and case studies

Objectives of the course
THE SKILLS OF INTERVIEWING
Identifying and practising the skills of face-to-face 1:1 communication, e.g. questioning, listening, interpreting and feedback.
STRUCTURE AND CONTROL
The structure and planning of the various types of interviews, e.g. selection, appraisal, discipline, grievance, counselling, will be discussed and techniques developed for keeping control of the interview.
THE SELECTION INTERVIEW
How to prepare for the selection interview by having produced a job description and person specification and what questions should be asked to be able to assess the candidate against the previously identified criteria.
THE DISCIPLINARY INTERVIEW
Discussion on the need to have fair and consistent policies for handling disciplinary issues in the workplace. What procedures are seen to be fair taking into account current legislation in Guernsey and Human Rights legislation.
Identification of the types of day-to-day issues which managers may have to handle.
THE PERFORMANCE INTERVIEW
The importance of on-going feedback and appraisal to get the best from staff. Discussion on the format and skills required to conduct regular 1:1 discussions in order to agree objectives and improve performance.
SUMMARY AND LEARNING/ACTION POINTS
Delegates will commit themselves to actions they can personally take in the workplace to improve 1:1 communication with their staff.
